Ah, but KBB says it’s worth at least $7,250.  Much cheap!  Very bargain!

He’s trying to sell a trailer full of parts that are roughly held together in the shape of a broken truck, and he has the audacity to say “Runs Amazing.” This might be the most delusional seller on FB marketplace that I’ve ever seen, and that’s saying something.

Edited to add: this is why I am glad that I live in a state that requires annual safety inspections.

if I make the fender badge out correctly, it’s a 7.3 powerstroke.  he’ll get that from someone who wants the engine and trans.

I suppose that pile is worth something if the engine truly has only 80k on it. If the mentioned parts really are fully functional and you needed all of them for a truck you were rebuilding that parts list would add up. But 1) probably n ot to two grand, 2) if the frame rusted out like that I seriously question whether the components are actually good, and 3) if he’s dropping that kind of attitude in the ad, you know he won’t be reasonable.

TL;DR - the crackiest of pipes.  Drugs are bad, mmmkay?

Agreed on all points. He might be able to get $2k if he pulled all the good parts and sold them separately. But as a literally broken in half pile of junk? Hahaha, no!

Yeah, how would one go about even getting the engine/trans out even remotely safely?

Kinja'd!!!3

It takes delusional to new heights.

I’m torn on the safety inspection thing. For one, a lot of places would call my truck unsafe based on the rocker panels. Mostly though, as crooked as my state and many  local goverments are around here, I think it would immediately just become a way to steal more money from is, without actually taking any of the genuine death traps off of the road.

If it wasn’t a rust bucket I would say he’s a little high but in the right ballpark for parting out the drivetrain...but would you want axles from that heap?

Living in PA, I don’t see death traps on the road. On my trip to Michigan last year, I saw some terrifying vehicles on the highway. One looked like it was held together by tape.

Safety inspections keep a lot of unsafe vehicles off of the road. And yes, perhaps they end up taking a few vehicles off the road that aren't too bad. But it's not like PA just fails any car with rust. If they did, we'd have empty roads.

My state requires it as well and I think its about 50/50, as in some of the requirements are onerous and stupid, but it does keep at least the absolute worst shitheaps off the road. Its also good because I dont think the Chads and Karens around me would ever bother to check things like tail lights, so at least this is happening annually.  The biggest issue is the law set the rate that shops can charge, and its cheap (~$25) which means theu rush them fast so in terms of actually catching real safety problems, they are only getting the biggest, most obvious ones.

it’s a F-350 so it should have solid axles front and rea r instead of TTB up front . Rear is a Ford Sterling HD, I think the front may be a Dana.

Here in Delaware, I see quite a few, even though we don’t use much road salt. Our inspections are ridiculously simple, they’re done by the state, not independent shops, and only take about 10 minutes and don’t involve the driver getting out of the car. As long as the lights, wipers, and horn work, tailpipe and gas cap emissions are within speck, the driver’s window goes down, and the car can stop itself from about 5mph on pad inside the building, it passes. Drive in, drive out. And you only have to do it when your registration expires, and you can pay for a couple of years’ registration at once, so there’s some real shitheaps that barely made it through that can keep on getting driven legally for a few more years.

However, I’m sure that at least does something to keep a few of the absolute worst vehicles off the road, since something that can’t even pass that really shouldn’t be sharing the roads with other people. Its something, probably better than nothing, glad we at least have that.

We don’t have safety inspections in Washington, and I never see death tr aps like this. The only vehicles I see regularly that are unsafe would be super-lifted bro trucks

You must not spend much time around homeless camps then. But generally I see very few sketchy cars on the highways.

If it really only has 80k miles on it and is that bad, it most likely was a plow truck beaten hard every time it was used. Extra crack in that pipe.

So is it rust or safety inspections that contribute the most to a high number of safe/unsafe vehicles on the road? My bet is on rust.

Police seem to do a decent job here of dealing with the terribly unsafe vehicles. I see contractors with rediculous truck bed loads pulled over fairly frequently, but obviously that's not something a safety inspection could catch

There’s a bunch of camps in industrial areas that are made up of cars, vans, and rvs parked along the roads. And of course 5 bikes for every person.

I believe the theory is that the safety inspections catch and pull the rusted out shit- boxes off the road. We don't have inspections here in Illinois. Just rust.

You’re absolutely right, and I’m not complaining about that. I live in Virginia now, used to live in Maryland, and still go there almost weekly. In Maryland a car only has to be inspected when it’s sold. It’s a thorough inspection, and costs usually $75-100 depending on the shop, but that’s the only time it happens. It’s amazing the difference in the amount of crap-can cars on the road in MD vs. VA. And typically if I see a heap in my neck of the woods, I’m looking for MD plates on it.

I give VA like 7/10 - it’s overall a good program but could be better. I think if it were up to me I’d like to see it every 2 years instead of annually, but make the fee $50 so the shop has more time to do a “real” safety inspection and look for structural problems, etc. and eliminate some of the more BS requirements - I got dicked around over a very minor exhaust leak and it took me 3 trips to get it to pass inspection.  Emissions problem, maybe, but not safety.
